So yeah, still got trouble with my MakerBuino BUT - I do have a bog-standard arduino. If i’d have the code needed to bootstrap my arduino, and I hook up the screen correctly, I can at least verify the screen is working.
So, is that code available anywhere?
I was given this link for the makerbuino bootloader source code if its any help??.

So if you just want to test the screen, it’s a Nokia 5110 screen - This tutorial from Sparkfun should let you see if the screen is working. https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/graphic-lcd-hookup-guide They provide a sketch that should let you test it - Adafruit also has a 5110 library - which has some different sketches in it. https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-PCD8544-Nokia-5110-LCD-library
