Low signal strength in Scotland/UK

Hello, just built my ringo phone and everything worked out of the box. Very smooth process.

However, I am getting a very spotty connection. The signal strength is between 0 and 5 in an area where a regular phone would have 3 bars. As far as I can tell the hardware is working fine. Is it possible that the antenna is damaged? It came with a sharp bend.

Also, if there is no hardware issue and thus I live in a poor coverage area, can I add a larger antenna to improve the connection?
