I am about to start making the phone and am having difficulty removing the battery from the main circuit board. Any hints, or do I just tug on the wires and hope for the best?

Take small pliers or something similar and grab the plastic part of the wires (the little white connector). That way you’ll easily get the battery out without damaging anything.
