Are there any specific things I should consider if I want to install a physical switch for the microphone? I understand that the spaces may make this impossible. Can the phone connect with an external microphone like on a set of headphone? Thank you for the information.

You can just find the PCB trace for the microphone, cut it and install a switch.
An external microphone cannot be connected without doing some hardware modifications.
