No signal.. what am I doing wrong?

Just received my preassembled 4G unit… yey! Charged it for two hours… inserted sim… ran through the setup… everything passed except for sim test 3/3. Updated firmware… factory reset… setup… same thing. Stuck on “loading” on top. Confirmed working T-Mobile sim card. Ting card same issue. Inserted sim exactly as shown by both the built in setup visual and the online get started instructions and confirmed with a few previous posts on this forum. I opened up the phone and inspected and reseated all the parts just to make sure. I’m in an area with strong signal (NYC). I tried using the phone in clear skies, restarted but nothing. 911 works though (sometimes). I successfully restored the firmware from CircuitBlocks but no sim change. I’m stumped.

Everyone seems to have the same problem, but everyone just talks about going outside or switching services. I haven’t seen one difference in what people are doing. I have done it all and every phone company I talk to say the same thing. No one can get my makerphone to work.

Just to make things clear - not everyone is having signal issues and MAKERphone will work with any carrier if it supports the network bands used by the carrier.

The problems usually arise because of the assembly or some other reasons and they are usually quite unique.

From what I can tell, there hasn’t been much difference between the actual problem and “generic” problems. The Ringo seems to have “loose drivers”. I believe that occurs when multiple C libraries conflict with each other, but anything can set off a driver. There are many big reasons that are simple like inserting the SIM in the wrong side or using the wrong SD card. I’m trying to avoid more complicated solutions like searching through the board or switching out components for kicks. I bought the assembled, so I assumed the majority of problems would be software related. I’m running out on my troubleshooting list for this one.

@8bitRobot I’m not sure what “loose drivers” means, but we’ve put a lot of effort into making MAKERphone’s software as good as we could and we’re patching it regularly as well.

If you’ve bought the assembled unit, of course you won’t be required to do manual rework or assembly.

Please, just wait for Robert’s instructions on how to fix this issue, he’ll help you out.

Since you’ve pretty much tried every simple fix, I’m going to have to ask you to give me some more data.

Did you install Arduino IDE drivers for Ringo? I will need to see what does “Serial” say when you turn on the phone so we can check out whether is Network board working properly or not.

Are you familiar with the Serial option in the Arduino IDE or do you need a guide?

I see that your CSQ is 99 at the beginning - it means that something is possibly either not connected properly or broken from the components that are trying to connect to the network.

That is probably the reason that you cannot get the signal.

Can you please go to the Settings -> About & Update -> SIM Module Debug, so we can see if the phone recongises any carriers?

We’re still going to repair it for you free of charge and return it, we just cannot pay the bill of you shipping it to us.

This deal with DHL was a thing we’re doing to make this whole thing of repairing the device completely free for our customers. We just cannot make deal with every shipping company in the world so we did it with one that covers pretty much everything.

Sorry if you feel that way about Ringo, but we can always fix the problem and send it back to you. Feel free to send it any way you can at any time.

@8bitRobot If there is a signal, that means that it works. The strength of the signal is not something that we can affect in any way. Everything works great for the vast majority of our customers so I guess it must be either a hardware or a network problem.
And since you’re getting at least some signal, that means that the hardware is functional.

Of course we’re still trying to get to the bottom of this since every customer is important for us, but every case is so specific that we just don’t have an immediate solution for everyone.
